Coffey Stills, Blending and Global Expansion
Aeneas Coffey patented an influential continuous still design in 1831. Column distillation made lighter grain spirit efficiently and at scale. Blenders could combine that spirit with characterful malt whiskies to create approachable, repeatable house styles.
Nineteenth-century merchants built international brands and distribution networks. Phylloxera damage to European vineyards also reduced brandy supply and opened opportunities for Scotch. Technology, blending, trade and circumstance—not one heroic invention—drove global growth.
