Highland and the Islands

Highland is the largest and most geographically varied region. It includes mainland areas and the islands other than Islay. Coastal, mountain and inland locations contribute stories and operating conditions, but no single flavour describes the whole region.

Island whiskies are often marketed through maritime imagery, peat or rugged landscapes. Those themes can orient a learner, yet the reliable comparison remains distillery process, spirit style and cask history. A Highland label should invite another question, not end the analysis.

Key ideas

01

02

Most island distilleries are legally Highland.
