Nosing: Finding Aromas Without Intimidation
Observe first: note colour and clarity without turning them into a quality score. Bring the glass toward the nose gradually, keep the mouth slightly open and take short, gentle sniffs. High-strength alcohol can numb perception if inhaled too deeply.
Start with broad families—fruit, floral, cereal, smoke, spice, oak or earthy—before searching for precise objects. Personal memory shapes aroma language, so “pear” and “fresh orchard fruit” can both be useful. A clear honest description is better than an impressive borrowed list.
