MODULE 01 · 8 MIN
From Grain to Glass: The Big Picture
The broad sequence is simple: prepare cereal, make fermentable liquid, ferment it, distil the wash, mature the spirit in oak, then blend or select, reduce if required and bottle. Each decision changes what the drink may become.
Flavour is created throughout the chain. Fermentation and distillation shape the new make spirit; cask history and time transform it during maturation; blending and bottling decide how the matured whisky reaches the drinker. No single stage explains everything.
Key ideas
Remember the sequence: cereal, fermentation, distillation, maturation, bottling.
Spirit character exists before the cask.
Oak transforms spirit but does not erase every earlier choice.
