MODULE 01 · 8 MIN
Essential Beginner Vocabulary
A few terms unlock most whisky conversations. “Single” means one distillery, not one cask. “Malt” refers to malted barley and, in the Single Malt category, pot-still production. “Blend” means whiskies have been combined; it is a method, not a synonym for low quality.
Age statements use the youngest whisky in the bottle. ABV is alcohol by volume. A cask finish is an additional period in another cask, while full-term maturation describes the main maturation vessel. These distinctions prevent confident-sounding but inaccurate claims.
