Capstone: Separate Fact, Inference and Sales Claims
Verified facts are supported by current documents: cask number, measured volume, strength, warehouse, ownership acknowledgement and contractual naming rights. Inferences interpret those facts: an active cask may continue adding oak influence, or lower strength may limit a long holding period. Inferences should state uncertainty.
Sales claims—projected returns, “guaranteed buyers”, future bottle counts or assured rarity—require evidence and may still be uncertain. In the capstone, read a fictional label and cask sheet, mark each statement Fact, Inference or Claim, identify missing documents and explain one risk before deciding what to ask next.
Key ideas
Documents support facts; they do not remove all risk.
Inference must be labelled as inference.
Guaranteed-return language is incompatible with responsible cask education.
