MODULE 12 · 10 MIN
Provenance, Warehousing, Ownership, Sampling and Bottling
A sales invoice alone may not establish that an approved warehouse recognises the buyer as owner. The contract should identify the cask and warehouse, and the warehousekeeper should acknowledge the ownership transfer in the form it requires. Identity checks, storage terms, insurance and movement restrictions also matter.
Sampling, regauging, movement and bottling can all create charges and losses. Single Malt Scotch must be bottled in Scotland, and duty, tax, packaging, label approval, minimum runs and export requirements may add substantial cost. Casks are not traded on a transparent regulated exchange with guaranteed liquidity.
